High School Friends

Did you have a lot of friends in high school or just one or two very close friends? What did you and your friends do for fun? Are you still in contact with any of them?

I guess I had a lot of friends in high school due to Girl Scouts. The same bunch always hung around. But, my closest friend was a twin and we did most stuff together. I guess you can say we had been friends since 3rd grade. We were in scouts together, band together, a lot of our classes were together, our moms were our leaders our Senior year and hung out together and my mom fixed my friends mom’s hair until the day she moved to Florida. If I wasn’t over at their house, they were over at mine. Many sleep overs, riding around the big block, many trips, doing things we weren’t suppose to and basically just having a good time as kids.

But, as time went by after graduation, we grew further and further apart. I have seen her and her twin sister a few times since then, but we are so far apart in distance now that things are not the same and I hate that.

Just a few months ago, her mother passed away and I wasn’t able to attend the funeral, but my heart ached so badly for the family. Another part of my life was gone.

Teenager

Moving on in life, as a teenager what do you feel were your greatest achievements and worse mistakes? Have these achievements and/or mistakes helped to make you a better person? Or did they hinder you as you proceeded into adulthood?

My teenage years were not the worse time of my life, but they weren’t the best either. But, I do remember having fun with my friends, making a terrible choice of boyfriend and going through puberty!!!! Now that I am going through menopause, I feel like I am going through puberty again.

There was a couple of things that happened to me that I feel changed my life a bit. My 8th grade, I tried out to be a majorette with the marching band, and not only did I get the position, I was named Captain and Drum Majorette. The day the posted the list of the ones that made it, I remember all the girls looking at me and wondering why I was chosen for those jobs. Believe me, it wasn’t accepted very well, but it didn’t matter. I learned a lot from that experience and I think I was a good leader. I later became the Drum Majorette for the Senior High School band and loved every minute of that!! Especially the uniform I got to wear.

The other thing in my teen life that I feel was a great accomplishment was making 1st Class in Girl Scouts. It takes many years to finally get to that stage and I am still very proud of that today. Girl Scouts taught me a lot and I still use some of the things I learned from those 12 years today. I wish all girls could experience all the fun I had being a Girl Scout and I am sure a lot of that is due to the fact that we had great leaders. All the trips, camp adventures and still my favorite today was 6 years at Girl Scout Camp in the summer. I loved it!!

Pets

As a child did you have any exotic (i.e. those not indigenous to your area) or unusual pets? If not, did you have any pets at all? What kind? Did you give them standard pet names or come up with unusual and unique names?

As a little girl, Duke the boxer was my 1st pet and my 1st friend. He was big, very gentle and I loved to hug on him. My parents said I would put clothes on him and ride his back. As the years passed, we had another dog. Pepe the poodle. That dog hated me and I have the scar on my lip to prove it!!!!!
As I aged, I went back to boxers. They are such good family loving dogs. Barkley was next, named by my son. Then came the sweetest boxer I have ever owned, Mia. She was the best dog anyone could ever own. Now we have a rescued boxer, Ernest T. Bass, with the long tail. Mr. Ernest is in a league of his own. He had some hard times before he came to us, tied up all the time and found running in the streets. It has been a year now with him and he is still afraid when we leave the house, but is much better. He is slowly becoming a great companion and I am glad we found him.

Parent’s Worked

Did your mother and father work outside the home when you were a child? If not which one stayed home with you? Or did you have a sitter come in or did you attend a day care center? Whether a parent stayed home, you had a sitter or attended a day care, how do you feel that affected your life, if at all?

My mother didn’t start working until my dad retired from the Navy and we moved back to our home town. She then got her beauticians license and began that business that kept her busy for over 40 years until the day they moved and retired to Florida.

My dad, after the Navy, worked as a postman until health problems forced him to take it easy. He then started working for my mother’s dad’s L.P gas company until the day he had his heart attach. He wasn’t able to work after that, but after a few years of struggling with his heart and being on the heart transplant list, he received his heart 17 years ago and at the age of 77 is doing just fine.

So I actually was old enough to stay by myself when both parents were working from the house, so I guess I had it great with my mom being around with my brother and me.

I admire women today that decide to stay home with their children and I admire women that can work and juggle a home life also. I had to work from the time my child was born and he stayed with baby sitters until he started school. I wish I could’ve been there with him while he was smaller.

Chores

Did you have specified chores as a child? If so, what were they? Were you given an allowance for completing them? How much? What chores did you feel were unfair? Which ones did you enjoy the most?

Since I was raised in a military family, my brother and I were expected to do a lot of chores. If we got paid, I don’t recall. We did a little bit of everything. Yard work and working in the house. This lasted until we both left my parents home.

There was a couple of chores I remember that I really hated. We had this brick sidewalk edging that we had to paint white and at another house, we had a brick side walk that we would have to keep the weeds from coming up between the bricks. HATED BOTH THOSE JOBS!!!!!!

But I also think because of all those chores we did, makes me a better house cleaner. I take pride in my home and my husband thinks I go beyond normal house cleaning at times.

Collection

Did you collect anything as a child? Why or why not? What was the significance of your collection and where did you procure it? Do you still have any or all of the collection now?

When I was in Girl Scouts, many, many, MANY years ago, you could get a badge for collecting. So I did a penny collection. My mother told me to go see my great grandmother and that she might have some really old pennies. Well, she gave me her “pocket book” to look through that was full of pennies. I found so many really old pennies that my collection goes back to the 1920′s.
I still have that collection and need to start back from the year 2000. I am sure its not worth anything, but remembering time with my grandma is worth more than any amount of money.

My collection that I treasure the most is of the Miami Dolphin’s quarterback Dan Marino memorabilia. I have tons of stuff from him that I have displayed many places in my home. I have been collecting since the late 80′s and have lots of his sports cards, stuffed toys, coins, bobble heads, autographed football, part of his racing car, autographed pictures, cereal box, small football helmets, beer bottles, small figures from his college days, lunch box and lots of magazines. My prize possession is an autographed by Marino, Miami Dolphin #13 team jersey that was given to my on my 40th birthday and I hang it proudly in my house. A friend of mine that played with the Dolphins back in the 70′s had Mr. Marino sign the jersey for me.

Imaginary Friend

As a child, did you have any imaginary friends? What were their names and what did you do together? If not, do you wish that you had and why or why not?

I actually didn’t have an imaginary friend. But, my brother made a great substitution.
