Elementary School

Let’s move up to elementary school. What school did you attend? What was it like.. big, small, etc.? Did you ride a bus or walk? Take a lunch or buy? What was your best memory there and what was your worse?

My 1st few years in elementary school was spent in Hawaii and when I was in the 3rd grade, we moved back to the states. I went to 3 different 3rd grade schools. A person learns how to make friends fast!!

My school in Hawaii was King Kamehameha Elementary School and I loved that school. I don’t remember how I got there everyday, but I am sure my mom took us. I don’t even remember seeing school buses.

My 2nd 3rd grade school was in Missouri, where my family is from and where we finally stayed until 2002. I remember having to stand outside a lot at that school and I rode the bus because I got lost my first day and the poor bus driver had to drive me all over the place to find my house. I was there 3 months and then we moved to another town in Missouri and I finished the rest of my school career there.

I walked sometimes and sometimes I rode the bus. I ate school lunches and my schools were small. School was a little rough on me at first because I wore glasses and was teased a lot because of that. But by far, my years in school were normal and I enjoyed them. I had special friends and it saddens me that we don’t keep in touch like we use to.

I guess one of my favorite memories of my school years was when I came to my last 3rd grade school the teacher asked this girl to show me around. The first place she showed me was the bathroom. I will never forget that and she ended up being a dear friend all through school.

Traveling and Sleeping

You are between 5 and 10. You are going on vacation (or moving). What form of transportation was used to get there? Did it take long? And what did you do to entertain yourself while traveling?

We were still living in Hawaii at that time, so we couldn’t travel too far or we would fall in the ocean. I do remember walking to a lot of places though. We did have this really cool car that my dad help restore while we were over there and it was a convertible!!!!! I love convertibles. My dream car is a vw convertible. We all still talk about this car today and wish we could have brought it back to the states with us.

As a child did you have your own bedroom or did you have to share? What was it like? Did you spend a lot of time playing in there or was it reserved for sleeping?

As far as I can remember, my brother and I had separate rooms. There was a point, after we just moved back to the states, that we lived in a very small trailer behind my grandparents house and we had bunk beds. So I slept on top and my brother slept below. There was a reason why I slept on top, because my brother wasn’t potty trained yet and I had a fear that he would tinkle on me during the night if I slept in the lower bunk. We still laugh about that today.

One of the other good things about being on the top bunk and living in a small metal trailer was the sound of the rain hitting the roof. That was a very pleasant memory.

Before I was 3

We all have had stories told to us about our younger years. Fun, silly or embarrassing things we have done. So today, think about a story that you were told about yourself that happened before you were 3 years old.

I have actually seen movies of this, so I know the story is true. When I wasn’t much older than a year old and just walking good, my parents told me that I loved to dance in front of the tv when Dick Clark was on. Well, the story goes that as I was dancing, my little training pants kept falling down. I was still dancing and holding up my pants at the same time. Evidently, I really loved Dick Clark a lot.

First Memories

Blog Prompt: What was your first memory as a child and why do you think it stands out in your mind?

It seems my 1st memories were when we lived in Hawaii, while my dad was stationed over there in the Navy. I was around 5ish and I remember the days always being warm, going swimming on Christmas, a beach always close and many kids to play with. My brother finding out the hard way that he was really allergic to red ants and that I could walk to my skating lessons and Brownie meetings. We always got out of school on May 1st, the day Hawaii claimed their independence and when the Star Bangle Banner started playing, we had to stop in our tracks, hold our hands over our hearts and watch as our flag was being raised. This was very important in our school and I am sure the reason was because Hawaii had not been part of the US for very long. I wonder if they still do that at my old school.

I remember every house we lived at in Hawaii and even the address of the last house we lived in, 705 Konnick Place. That house didn’t have any rugs on the floor and all the walls were concrete. The reason I say this, is because when we moved back to the states, the walls weren’t concrete and there was wall to wall carpet. Silly how we remember things like that.
