After I moved to Georgia from Missouri, I still wanted to go to Evansville, IN with my bowling team from Missouri for our yearly tournament trip.
Now, I am a little on the cheap side and didn’t want to pay for a plane ticket, so I thought I would take the bus from Macon, GA to Sikeston, MO. OMG!! It was a horror movie from the very start.
I left Macon and was to catch the next bus at Atlanta. I sat in their bus depot for a few hours waiting for a bus that was full and would only accept a handful of people. And on top of that wasn’t going to Memphis but to Nashville. I just so happen to be one of the 5 that was allowed on the bus, after midnight. Oh the story only gets better.
We had been on the road for about 3 hours and when you get close to Chattanooga, TN the mountains are a plenty. We started going up one side of the mountain and I noticed the bus wasn’t moving very well. When topped the hill, the bus driver stopped the bus and went outside to check the motor. There was smoke and all kinds of “something is wrong” smells coming out of the motor. He was able to drive it to the next convenient store and we all sat there, in the middle of the night, for 3 hours for another bus to come and pick us up.
So, now we are on our way to Nashville and I knew when I got there that I was going to miss the bus that I was suppose to catch in Memphis, because of the delay. A few hours later, when we finally made it to Memphis, I was told there wasn’t another bus until 10 pm that night. It was 10 am that morning and I just lost it!!!!!!! I started crying and thought, what am I going to do. There is a crazy man with a bag over his head sitting in the waiting room where I was waiting with the other passengers that were stranded just a crying. I thought to myself, “I am 45 years old, I’m going to call my mama!!!!!!!!! wwwwwwhhhhhaaaaaaaa” So, I called her collect and my parents drove the 3 hours to come and pick me up!! I had been on that 10 hour trip for more than 18 hours and still had 3 hours to go to get home. And then I realized, I had to take the trip back home on the bus.
Well, as luck would have it, the trip back (a different route) was great! There wasn’t hardly anyone on the bus the whole trip and there were no problems. Except for the fact that my bus driver was Red Skelton’s evil twin.
So, no more traveling via Greyhound bus and I will pay the extra money to fly. Which I hate doing now too! Another story, another day!
