Favorite Halloween Costume

Blog Prompt: What is your favorite Halloween costume? It can be one that you have seen or one that you have worn.

When my brother and I were younger, my mom made us Indian outfits.  I loved that outfit and I wish I had a picture of it.  But, we do have movies of us wearing them.  I remember they were made of really soft brown material and there was fringe!  It was so cool for a costume and my mom was good about making our stuff for Halloween.  I don’t even know if they had store bought costumes back in the 60’s.

Candy Corn Anyone?

Blog Prompt: Do you like candy corn? Why or why not?

This is my all time favorite of all Halloween candy and I can’t believe this was the prompt today.  When my son use to go out on Halloween, I always confiscated his Candy Corn.  I would tell him it was too hard to eat and give him the rest.  He never got upset, so that little “white lie” worked.  hehehe

I don’t know why I love this sweet little morsel the best out of all other Halloween candy.  Maybe because its easy to eat, doesn’t make a mess and because its just so darn good!

Personalized Christmas Cards

I love beautiful Christmas cards for the holidays to send to your family or friends and the Gallery Collection has some of the finest Personalized Christmas Cards I have seen in awhile.  I just love receiving personalized items in the mail, especially at Christmas and reading about the past year.  My favorite are photo cards and seeing family and friends from a far.  The card to the left is the one I have chosen for myself.  Its just too cute and before you know it, it will be time to send them in the mail.

Crafted of the finest quality card paper stocks, the cards feature sculpted embossing, rich colors, and brilliant foils. Gallery Collection has something to please every taste. Choose from among Christian religious images, patriotic themes, Peace on Earth motifs, glimpses of nature and wildlife, urban silhouettes, country vistas, homey warmth, and symbols of the season.  They also have a wonderful page of holiday greetings to choose from to put inside your cards.  That’s great for me because I have a hard time finding the right thing to say.

GalleryCollection.com is pleased to announce its donation of 800 greeting cards to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.  The donation is being made in part to GalleryCollection.com’s “Show Me a Smile” Greeting Card Gift Giving Program.  What a wonderful contribution to children while they are staying in the hospital during the holidays and all the wonderful smiles the cards will put on their sweet faces.

The Big One

Blog Prompt: Crash of Wall Street stock market, Great Depression begins 1929. If you lost all of your money, what would you do to make it through until the economy turned around.

I am from an area in Missouri that has one of the largest earthquake zones in America.  The New Madrid Earthquake zone virtually ran in my backyard.  Living in that area, you were use to the occasional small little shake.

In 1990 a man, Iben Browning, predicted that there was a 50/50 chance that we were going to have the 8.0 earthquake  in December that has been predicted for years.  There was one of those back in about 1890 that made the Mississippi River run backwards.  It devistated the area at that time.  Anyway, of course, our area just kind of shrugged off the prediction.

Then on September 26, 1990 we had a 4.6 earthquake and thats when the area really started waking up and thinking, wow, this might really happen in December as predicted.  I mean I got into major earthquake mode and trying to figure out what I needed to do to prepare for this.

Everything would be shut down.  No money, small amounts of food, little shelter and probably only the water in my hot water heater to use.  I made sure all my important papers were all in the freezer.

I watched programs on tv about being prepared and was told the National Guard wouldn’t be able to reach us for at least 2 weeks because the roads would be destroyed.

I had plastic boxes filled with water purifying pills, clothes and other items needed to last for a couple of weeks.  I also made sure my kitchen cabinet doors wouldn’t fly open and my china cabinet was bolted to the wall.  Body bags were stored all over the area and I also stored items in my car.

And then I saw the program as to what would happen to the ground where we lived.

The area where I lived is all sand and close to the Mississippi River.  When a major earthquake comes in that area, the sand will turn into quick sand.  There won’t be hardly any survivors in that area because everything will probably sink.  I just fell apart and really worried about what to do to prepare for that.  So, it was just a sit and wait game.

December came and went, no big earthquake and I’m sure today, no one is prepared anymore.   There have been a few smaller quakes there since then and there was actually a 5.+ earthquake just a few months ago.  I hope and pray when the “Big One” happens, that everyone is safe and able to get out.

The map below shows where I lived in the red area.  All those dots are previous earthquakes.

Rediscover My Passion

Blog Prompt: What lost passions would you like to rediscover?

I would love to start painting again with oils and water colors.  I use to do this a lot when I was in school and have had some paintings shown in area art shows.  When my husband and I were dating and the first time he was at my parents house, he noticed my pictures my mom displayed.  He asked me why I quit painting and I didn’t have any excuse.  Life, I’m sure, got in the way after high school.

So, on our wedding day, he gave me a brand new set of oils and wanted me to start back up.  Well, those oils are still in the box and in my craft closet.  There are a lot of painting classes given in the area and maybe, someday I will take one them.  I need too before that old age takes over my hands.

Something else I would love to rediscover is being a young mother again.  I sure do miss all those wonderful times when my son was a baby.

If My Dog Could Talk

Blog Prompt: Alan “Rocky” Lane (voice of Mr. Ed – the talking horse – and actor in Red Ryder and more) died of bone cancer October 27, 1973. If you could give a voice to something in your life that can’t talk, what would it be?

Thats easy!!  My dog.  I would love to know what he is thinking when I talk to him.  I have told my husband that I would love to hear what he has on his mind for 24 hours.

Can you imagine the conversation:

ME:  Ernest, lets go for a walk.

ERNEST:  Do I have too?  I would rather play outside or do nothing but take a nap.  I don’t need a walk, I already pottied today and you won’t let me play with the dogs that pass by anyway.  I don’t like wearing that leash either.  I just want to run free!

ME:  But you need your exercise.

ERNEST:  I look fine, you are the one that needs the exercise.  Oh, by the way.  You owe me a treat.  You forgot one 2 weeks, 1 day ago.  Give it up.

Maybe I should rethink this…….hhhhhmmmmmm

Let There Be Light

Still working on updating our house and I still have a problem with that ugly light in the bathroom. Half of it works, it looks like something you would have in a dressing room and its time to update my light fixtures.  I love the new look of the bronze color for lighting today. I found some really great items to choose from at The Lighting Showplace. Great prices, great items and the best names out there when it comes to lighting fixtures.
