Old Stuff

oldstuffBlog Prompt – Today is “Old Stuff Day.” How can you expound on this?

Well, around my house there is old stuff all over the place. It lays on the couch, its in the refrigerator, it sits at the dinner table, its in the closet, it makes noise all the time and basically, just hangs around. The “old stuff” I am referring to is my husband. Yes, he would admit that he is old stuff and just getting older.

But seriously, I do have some old computer parts and Direct TV boxes that are finally leaving my home.  They are still sitting out in the garage, because we haven’t gone to the dump which allows these items.  My computer was 10 years old when it finally stopped working for me last month.  It was a good computer and I will miss its shiny existence under my desk.  Take care old friend!!

Everyone have a great day with your old stuff,

My Computer and Adam Lambert

Blog Prompt – “Communication: The art and technique of using words effectively to impart information or ideas.” That is what we are accomplishing here. A form of communication by using words effectively to impart information. But with the advent of the computer and the shortcuts used on the computer to convey ideas and emotions it appears they are becoming more prevalent in our day to day lives, as well.

How has communication changed since the computer became a household appliance?

Our computer is the hub of our household for sure.  Always looking up information.

My husband can find all the sports information that he needs to keep up with his football team.  Every morning when he gets up, he will turn on the computer, check out the latest with the Falcons and do a little research.  The draft is in a few weeks, so he is intently watching the forums right now.

I am always looking up information on Google, my new best friend.  I realized a while back that if you can’t find it on the internet, you can’t find it.  Of course, I use my computer to keep all my book keeping in line, my photos at a fingers touch and all my music is always on hand to listen to while I work.  I look up recipes, directions, my banking and I can shop! I much prefer having my purchases brought to my front door and I don’t have to drive. I also love my calendar that pops up everyday to tell me what my appointments are coming up.

When I got my degree in Computer Science back in the ’70′s, I had no idea that the personal computer would do what it can do now.

One of the things I love doing is watching videos on YouTube.com.  I love posting my favs on my blog and today I am posting Adam Lambert’s performance on American Idol last night.  I just love this young man’s voice and I feel he is the best that has been on American Idol.  And he’s nice on the eyes too!

Have a great time on your computer today,

My Computer

Blog Prompt – Did you go to college or have vocational training – where and when?

I received my degree in Computer Science back in 1978.  A time when computers were just coming to the surface and new horizons were just around the corner.  I loved working on my degree and if any of you know about computers from that era, I had to use keypunch cards to write my programs.  Instead of instantly knowing if my program worked or not, I would keypunch in each line, one card per line, and wait until the huge room size computer spit out my results.  Usually took a few days.

I would go back, pick up my printed out version of my program and look for mistakes.  Key punch each line over that had an error and try again.  It would take weeks sometimes to write a program for a class.  Times have truly changed.

I used my degree for awhile and because of the area I lived in and that I was a woman, there wasn’t jobs to be found that were of good pay.  I wish I had stuck with it though or moved to a large city.  I can only imagine where I would be today with my career.

But then, I would be married to the wonderful man I am married to today and I wouldn’t have my wonderful child.  And I also wouldn’t have my own business and have wonderful digi scrap friends that I have today.  I do use my skills to do my own websites and blogs and just about anything I want to do on the computer.

I love my computer.

Browsers

I have used Internet Explorer for quite some time now and in the past few months, I was really starting to have  a problem with it hanging up, not loading java correctly and freezing up entirely.  I was having to restart my computer more than I was wanting to.  Since I am a geek at heart, I was totally confused.  Especially when I am  constantly using Spybot, CCleaner and Ad-Aware to remove spyware and other items that shouldn’t be on my computer.  It also clears up temp files and other registry items that shouldn’t be there.  All these are free and really work great, easy to use and you might want to check them out for your own computer to keep it squeeky clean.  I have used them for a few years now and PC World also recommends them.

But even using the extra software, I was pulling my hair out with IE.  So, after some serious research, I switched to Firefox.  I haven’t looked back since!!  I just love my new browser.  It’s quicker, it loads everything that should be loaded, it’s more secure and I love the extra plugin’s that they offer.  I love the reminder and weather plugin.  Heck, I didn’t even know that there were pictures on the home page of DST until I switched over!  I was missing out on a lot.

So if your computer seems to be having major problems while you are surfing the net, try Firefox and see if this doesn’t make a difference for you too.

Problems with File Extensions

Have you downloaded a program or opened a zip file and for some reason the file won’t open.  You get that error saying you don’t have a program to open it up with?  Then you look at the file extension and wonder, what is that?

You can now go to File Extension FLV and learn all you need to learn about all the different file extensions.  this library is very extensive with tons of information on the latest file extensions for popular programs being used today.  You learn how to fix the extension error, what the file extension name is and how to open a file extension.

You can get an instant scan to show what extensions are giving you problems in your registry.  If your registry is clogged up with old extensions, your computer could and will crash over the long run.

Memory for your Computer

I recently built the computer and I am always looking for great deals on computer parts.  One of the things I have found out that will boost the speed of your computer is RAM memory cards.  You will find problems running more than one application and if you don’t have enough RAM, your system will run very slowly.  Buying extra RAM is a cheap product to add to your computer for best results.

Memorystore.com is a great place to buy all the memory needs you are looking for.  You can have the Memory Wizard scan your computer to see what you need, look up your computer to check what you need or if you know what you need, you can find memory that way.  Great prices, an 800 number and Free Shipping!
