The Perfect Hot Dog

Blog Prompt: Today is National Hot Dog Day. How do you like to eat your hot dog? What do you put on it? Make us all hungry as you describe the perfect hot dog.

I love hot dogs cooked out on the grill.  Oscar Meyer all beef bun size dogs are the best!!  Yea, they are a bit more than the other brands, but they are worth it.

First, open the wheat bun (as I have aged I have switched to wheat bread), spread a bit of Dijon mustard, little bit of shredded cheddar cheese, diced onions, a little dill relish, chopped tomatoes and top all that off with the most perfect grilled hot dog.  You ask why I put the dog on top of all that?  Well, after many years of hot dog eating experience, I have found out that if I put the dog on top of all the condiments, they stay in the bun and not all over me or on my plate.

My husband loves slaw dogs.  They serve these at the famous Varsity in Atlanta.  It’s just a dog with cole slaw on top.  Pretty good dog.  You can also get this dog with chili too.  That didn’t really look that good, so I passed on it.  The Varsity is a great place to go to see the old fashioned curb hops and if you are craving grease, then this is the place for you and don’t forget to order their Orange drink.  That is worth driving there for and to hear the servers yell out as you order, “What ya have?”  Great place with tons of history in Atlanta.

Enjoy your favorite hot dog today,

Country Fried Chicken

Blog Prompt: Today is National Fried Chicken Day. When was the last time you had fried chicken? Describe the event, and the taste.

I love  this blog prompt.

Way back, many, many years ago in a land so far away, I attempted  to fry chicken on my brand new corning top stove.  I prepared my chicken and had it all ready to put in the skillet.  I carefully laid the chicken in the pan, to keep grease from splatting on my hand, and waited for the chicken to fry.  Well, no one told me exactly how much grease to put in the pan and before I knew it, there was a stove fire because the grease spilled over the edge of the pan.  My emergency brain went into action and I poured salt all over the stove and the fire was out quickly.

OH MY GOSH!  I had such a mess to clean up after that and since that day, many, many years ago, I swore I would NEVER fry chicken again in the house and I haven’t broke that promise yet.

Well, now to today.  When I married my hubby, I knew that he was a big fried chicken lover and ate it all the time when he went to the fire station to work.  When we were dating  and he asked me to fix fried chicken for him, he is from Georgia and I think they are born screaming fried chicken and drinking grease from a bottle.   I had to tell him my sad story of my last adventure of frying chicken and I swore I would never fry it again and that a KFC is right down the road.  He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, since I was a country girl and I truly thought that was the end of the relationship, but because he is the man he is, he hasn’t asked again for me to fry chicken in the house.  He’s better off without it anyway.  *s*

To tell you the truth, I’m not a big fried chicken person anyway, except when I am home in Missouri and I am  floating down Current River.  I don’t know how many of you float on inner tubes but its a crime if you don’t bring cold fried chicken in a cooler tied to an inner tube to float with you.  The picture on the left shows how we do it.

For some reason, after floating for awhile, you stop on a sandy bank, set out your fried chicken and drink and enjoy.  It’s sooooooo good then.  I miss that and would love to go back to float again.  Only in August though, because the river is spring feed and its colddddddd!

Everyone have a chickie day,

Fast Food, Dog Collars and Layout

Blog Prompt: Ray Kroc, Founder of McDonald’s Corp. – was born Ray Arthur Kroc on October 5, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois. Died January 14, 1984. What is your favorite fast food place and what do you like to order?

Who doesn’t love fast food!!  I would eat it all the time, but I know the consequences.  Just smelling those wonderful cheeseburgers and french fries makes me gain 20 pounds.  So, I might have a fast food dinner once a month.  I figure all the working out I do, I can eat one really bad meal.

Anyway, back to the question, my favorite fast food right now is Chick-fil-A.  Living in Missouri, I had never heard of this place because its mainly in the south.  When I met my husband and he took me to Georgia the first time, I kept noticing the crazy billboards with cows all over them and they looked like the printing was done by a 2 year old.  But they are great!!  During the 2004 Presidential election, the bill boards were just hilarious.  I have only seen the really funny ones up in the Jonesboro, GA area where Mr. Cathy lives.  I’ve seen a couple down here in Florida, but they are the average, Eat More Chicken ones.

Finally I asked my husand what Chick-fil-A was and I got the “Where have you been all your life?” look.  Forgetting I lived up north from him.  So, he took me to my first Chick-fil-A and I just loved the chicken wraps and their waffle fries!!  Of course, they are known for the chicken fillet with mustard and pickle sandwich, which McDonald’s is trying to copy.  If you love chicken, this is the place for you.

I also love the story of Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-Fil-A.  He lives where my husband was born and raised in Georgia and I also got to see his average ranch style home.  You would never know this man was this great entrepreneur.   I also love how he runs his companies and what he does for the surrounding community.  The restaurants are always closed on Sunday and he just doesn’t hire anyone to work there either.  I have never gone in a Chick-Fil-A where all the employees were not very nice, neat looking and considerate.

He also has the Dwarf House which is a very interesting restaurant in itself.  When you walk in the door, you either go left for very fast service and leave or to the right for a more sit down and enjoy your meal.  And yes, there is a dwarf red door in the very front for the kids and, well, I had to go through it too!  We would eat breakfast there sometimes

I love this quote by Mr. Cathy – Each person’s destiny is not a matter of chance; it’s a matter of choice.  It’s determined by what we say, what we do, and whom we trust.

I have been wanting to make my dog his own collars for a long time now and I finally got around to it yesterday.  I had some Halloween material and the collar hardware and got to it and was really surprised how easy the project was and how well it looked.  I love it when a project turns out better than I expected.

I think he looks quite handsome with his new collar and he posed so well for this picture too.  Good boy, Ernest!

I also have a layout to share with you made with a kit by Robyn Gough.  The kit is called Stawberry Mint Chip and I just loved all the pink colors.  This kit is so cute for little girls.
