Are You Prepared?

Blog Prompt – Today is Disaster Drill day. Do you plan and prepare for a disaster? If so, how?

Oh wow!! Seems I have been preparing for a disaster for many years.

Living in Southeast Missouri and on one of the largest earthquake zone will keep you prepared. I had heavy furniture nailed to the wall, plastic boxes of items which would be needed in a disaster, the hot water heater ready for extra water and I even had a pack full of items in the trunk of my car ready. We were always told to have items for at least 2 weeks because that would be how long it would take for help to come to our area. Had a few shakes which always made me aware of where I lived and to be prepared.

Now living in Central Florida, I have hurricanes to worry about and the first of every June, I make sure my little box is ready with supplies and that my batteries are all charged up and ready to go.

I hope when that day comes, I will be ready to keep our family safe.

Be safe,

Evacuation and Announcement

If I had 24 hours to evacuate my home before it was to be destroyed by a hurricane, what 10 things would I grab (not including people or pets)

This is such a great question since I live in Florida and I have thought about this many times.

1. My computer. Actually both my computers, external hardware, scanner and printer.

2.  Pictures, scrapbooks and all my photo CD’s

3.  All our important papers that are in a box

4.  As much Christmas items I can.  I have been collecting ornaments for over 30 years and you can’t replace them.

5.  All my DVD’s that I have made since I have been married.

6.  Any chocolate in the house.

7.  All my Dan Marino memorabilia.  There is a lot of that.  Oh and I guess I would have to get my husbands sports memorabilia.

8.  My camera and any other electronics.

9.  COFFEE

10. Cash

There is so much in my house that was handed down to me and can’t be replaced and that would break my heart if it was destroyed.  But, its just stuff.  And if I was to save any of the things I listed above and in the same process would loose my husband because of the hurricane, it would be meaningless.  My life will always be good with him.  No matter how much stuff I have.

I have a wonderful announcement.  I have been selected as one of Cara Mia Designs CT!  I love her work and can’t wait to get started.

Traditions and Florida Humor

Family traditions, new or old.

My family has a lot of traditions around the holidays.  Thanksgiving at my parents, Christmas morning at my house and Christmas dinner at my parents.  We did that for years and years.  Then my parents moved to Florida, I moved to Georgia and then to Florida and things changed.  It’s just us.  All the kids are grown and gone and live some where else making their own traditions with their new families.

I miss the traditions, but my husband and I have started some new ones.  For instance, I put up the Christmas tree while watching the Georgia and Georgia Tech football game.  Thanksgiving is still at my mom’s and Christmas at my house.  I’m thankful that my Aunt and her family will be here for Thanksgiving this year, so my mom can cook a big dinner again and we can enjoy a large family gathering.  We, of course, will miss my father being with us, but he will be remembered.

Since its still hurricane season here in Florida and I hope the people in Texas are ready for Ike tonight.  My prayers are with you guys!!  I just had to share a few hurricane pictures today with you.  Enjoy.

My Week and Hurricane Ike

It’s another week that my husband is in Georgia working and Ernest (the dog) and I are left to guard the fort.

Monday, I had lunch with a new neighbor and a couple of other gal pals that live here in our wonderful retirement community in Florida. Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh, lunch with the girls. Sitting outside on a perfect Florida day, sipping on a little tropical drink, looking out at the rolling hills of the golf course and just talking about, what else, our husbands!! I really enjoy lunches with the girls. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t anything better then time with my husband, but a girl just needs that time with other girl friends. I think we solved all the world problems that day and then we had to say good bye til next Monday. I wonder what “husband” stories we will have by then.

I worked on my website, made a few store items to display and did alot of research on the internet. I love doing research on the internet. Just Google a topic and there it is! I have found out, if you can’t find it on the internet, it ain’t there. I did have a hard time finding a long reach hole puncher with a 1/2 inch hole. But after many hours searching, I finally found one! Another thing to mark off my business list of things to do. Now if the wind would calm down a bit, I can go outside and take pictures of my store items.

Usually while my husband is gone on these weekly trips, I try to get alot of scrapbooking or video editing done while there is peace and quite and the only thing I have to really worry about is when the dog comes up to me to tell me its time to go outside to (I have to spell it) p-o-t-t-y.

Watching number 2 hurricane, Ike, and seeing how its going to affect the area.  I’m really worried about this one.  Hoping that it just blows itself out, but I don’t think so.  The weather seems to be getting a bit better and not so hot.  Which is a good thing here in Florida.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend with family and friends and see you on my next post.

Being a Little Angel and Tropical Storm Fay

Blog prompt: Today is Be an Angel Day. What is something nice you plan to do for someone else today?

Today I am helping my mom find some music she needs for her line dancing class.  When it comes to computer stuff, she calls me.  She raised me for 20 years in her home and I will always be there for her when she needs something.  And now that my dad is gone, she seems to be needing more help.  But, I know, she is sure enjoying her life now with all her new friends in her retirement community.   I wish everyone could enjoy life like that in their Golden Years.

GO AWAY FAY!!

Tropical Storm Fay just will not go away.  It will be making its way to shore again for the 3rd time in Florida in a day or two and we sure have received a lot of rain here in Central Florida.  I read the rain gauge for the NOAA and we have received about 5 inches of rain in 3 days so far.  There are some places that have gotten over 25 inches of rain with a lot of flooding.  The rain has really been coming down today and the radar is showing  more to come.  My poor dog is having a hard time figuring out how to do his business outside in the rain.  He does his business and back in the house.  No time to smell around and play.

The picture shows the really dark area and thats about where I live.  So those of you in the projected path, please be prepared for a lot of rain.

Bad Movies and Tropical Storm Fay

Blog Prompt: Tell about the worse movies you have ever seen.

I cannot deal with the “F” word being said every other word in a movie, so I stay away from them if possible.  To say I have seen a really bad movie lately, I would have to say no.  I usually check out the movie before I watch it.  I have seen good movies using the “F” word a lot and it was really hard for me to watch it, but the story was really great!  I just can’t be open minded when it comes to that.

I want to be entertained when I pay $7.00 for a movie and not leave in discust.  I love to laugh a lot while watching movies and shead a tear now and again.

The latest movies I went to see with some women friends was Sex and the City and Mamma Mia.

If you loved Sex and the City’s TV show, then you would love the movie.  And I’m sure all you women out there would love the bit of skin shown on one of the hot guys in the movie.  *fans self*  Sorry.  I like looking at good looking men.

I loved watching and singing through Mamma Mia.  I love Abba’s music and this movie was worth watching and when it comes out on DVD, I will probably watch it again.  I will also watch Sex and the City’s movie when it comes out on DVD.

Tropical Storm Fay

As most of you know, Tropical Storm Fay is making its way through Southern Florida as I type this.

I lived in Central Florida during the year the most hurricanes in history were recorded.  But, none really made an impact on Florida except for some rain.  Key West was hit a few times, but they are always ready for hurricanes and know what to do at a drop of a hat.

Since Tropical Storm Fay was suppose to be more than what we have seen since we have lived here, I was really preparing my home and family for the worse.  I am really impressed how the press and the Governor prepares the citizens of Florida for a hurricane.  Other coastal states should learn something from Florida and how it prepares for disasters.

So far all we have received is 1.10″ of rain yesterday from a feeder band and the real rain should start in a few hours.  We need the rain and this will help the water tables a lot.

This storm has truely prepared us for what may or should I say, happen in the future.
