Country Fried Chicken

Blog Prompt: Today is National Fried Chicken Day. When was the last time you had fried chicken? Describe the event, and the taste.

I love  this blog prompt.

Way back, many, many years ago in a land so far away, I attempted  to fry chicken on my brand new corning top stove.  I prepared my chicken and had it all ready to put in the skillet.  I carefully laid the chicken in the pan, to keep grease from splatting on my hand, and waited for the chicken to fry.  Well, no one told me exactly how much grease to put in the pan and before I knew it, there was a stove fire because the grease spilled over the edge of the pan.  My emergency brain went into action and I poured salt all over the stove and the fire was out quickly.

OH MY GOSH!  I had such a mess to clean up after that and since that day, many, many years ago, I swore I would NEVER fry chicken again in the house and I haven’t broke that promise yet.

Well, now to today.  When I married my hubby, I knew that he was a big fried chicken lover and ate it all the time when he went to the fire station to work.  When we were dating  and he asked me to fix fried chicken for him, he is from Georgia and I think they are born screaming fried chicken and drinking grease from a bottle.   I had to tell him my sad story of my last adventure of frying chicken and I swore I would never fry it again and that a KFC is right down the road.  He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, since I was a country girl and I truly thought that was the end of the relationship, but because he is the man he is, he hasn’t asked again for me to fry chicken in the house.  He’s better off without it anyway.  *s*

To tell you the truth, I’m not a big fried chicken person anyway, except when I am home in Missouri and I am  floating down Current River.  I don’t know how many of you float on inner tubes but its a crime if you don’t bring cold fried chicken in a cooler tied to an inner tube to float with you.  The picture on the left shows how we do it.

For some reason, after floating for awhile, you stop on a sandy bank, set out your fried chicken and drink and enjoy.  It’s sooooooo good then.  I miss that and would love to go back to float again.  Only in August though, because the river is spring feed and its colddddddd!

Everyone have a chickie day,

  1. If I have to eat fried chicken, cold is definitely the way to go. Never tried it on a tube though. Ummmm, may have to give that one a try. :)

  2. I used to work in the bakery of our local grocery store. We had a hot plate buffet that we were also responsible for, and Sundays were fried chicken day. We’d cook 5 or 6 chickens — dipping them in egg first and then in the batter. I don’t know if it was the seasoning or the egg or what, but that chicken was the crispiest and had the best taste I’d ever tasted. I learned how to do a number of things while working there — decorating cakes, cooking donuts and lots of different breads/rolls, making pizza…

  3. Mmmm, mmmm your post has made me hungry! Sunday dinner for us growing up was often fried chicken. My mom didn’t fry chicken though so KFC was our Sunday treat. My DH’s mom on the other hand made fried chicken about once a week.

I don’t fry chicken myself (never learned) but KFC here leaves much to be desired but Chicken Express has some great fried chicken. About once a month or every other month we’ll stop by after church and bring some home.

  4. I loved your fried chicken story! That sounds like something I would do!
