Blog Prompt – Today is when the first Scout Camp was opened. Were you a Girl Scout or did you go to a Scout Camp?

I was a Girl Scout for 12 years and loved all the work that we did for the community, the fun trips we took and the friendships that I still have after all those years.  Working on the badges was hard, but worth it.  I still have my penny collection from earning that badge.

I went to camp for 5 years during the summertime when I was older.  It was always during my birthday and the 4th of July.  I loved Camp Latonka.  It was by a lake and we stayed in cabins and when you were in high school, you stayed in large tents that were off the ground.  The picture to the left is where we always came for our group camp fires and sang songs.

We had great food, took swimming lessons, took overnight camping trips and I learned how to shoot a bow and arrow there.  We also did crafts that I always enjoyed.

When you were there for your 4th year, you were initiated into the Indian club.  I still have my Indian headband I wore that night.  Of course, the initiation process is very top secret and is done in the middle of the night.  I knew they were going to come for me, but I didn’t know when.  We took a little walk to a secret place and sat around a camp fire as we were told the story of our group.  Smoked a piece pipe and was given my Indian headband, along with our war paint.  The next morning we had to eat our cereal with a knife. It was great fun and a privilege to be part of that group.

I went my 5th year, so that I could help with the initiation of the new girls.  It was so much fun and I miss those days.

I will always cherish my Girl Scout memories and friends  forever.
