Key Ingredient
I’m going to deviate from the Fashion theme today and ask if you have ever been in the middle of cooking when if you realized you were missing a key ingredient and couldn’t make a dash to the store? What did you do?
I had a hankerin’ for oatmeal cookies the other night. So, I checked to see if I had all my ingredients and I was short 1 stick of butter. hhhhhhmmmmmm I thought, what would I use. Well, I looked in my pantry and had one of those stick Crisco’s and it was just enough for me to finish out my recipe. I had no idea what it would do to the cookies and I had no idea if the thing was still any good. It was still in the sealed wrapper, I smelled it and it smelled like Crisco. So I took a chance.
When it comes to making any kind of cookies, I am not the best at it. I can never make my cookies look like the ones on tv. How they spread out so nice and even. Mine are usually every shape imaginable.
When the 1st batch came out, and I tested it, it was great!!!!!!!!! My husband ate almost all those cookies in just a few days. Well, maybe I helped a bit on that.
So that recipe will stay the way I messed it up.
Great ingenuity! That’s exactly what I will do, substitute something I think will work, or in a pinch, go search online. Sometimes I can find a substitution in a cookbook. I think that if you use the butter crisco in cookies it almost always comes out better because the crico is more stable than butter.
LOL. Surprisingly enough we came up with the same solution. Only I was making a cake. As far back as I can remember we have always used crisco in our Tollhouse cookies instead of butter so they would be so crisp.
Great tip… I think I may now have to go and try it. I’m hungry for cookies!
Some of my best recipes are the result of experimenting when I no other choice. Now you have me craving oatmeal cookies.
I have always used crisco when baking. I also look in a cookbook or online if I need to substitute something.

This is how truly GRREAT recipes are made through ingenious thinking on the spot and experimentation! Great job and quick thinking on your part. Who knew they would turn out so great. I am going to have to remember this and keep some Crisco sticks on hand. lol! lol! lol! Way to go! Those cookies sounds YUMMY!
I don’t really know what crisco is, but glad your cookies turned out yummy!… I think I get the trophy for worst cookie baker though, everytime I try, I get one flat cookie the size of the baking tray??!
