The Economy and Elvis

Blog Prompt: How has this change in the economy affected you?

Being retired and on a very fixed income, of course the economy is always knocking on our front door.  Since we don’t use that much gas, that hasn’t really effected us much.  We usually just get out in the car maybe once or twice a week and will put about $20.00 in the tank every once in awhile.  Also, we drive a smaller car and that helps.  Over where my mom lives because she drives her golf cart all the time, she hardly ever uses her car.

Now the price of food is different.  There are just the 2 of us and we have noticed a spike in the food prices here in Florida.  One good thing that is on our side is that Florida doesn’t charge taxes for food, so we do save there.  We don’t spend that much on food, but I’ve noticed that I am now buying store brand items instead of name brand items to save money.  We are also buying in bulk and our freezer is full!

The economy really hit our business badly though.  It took a really long time to sell our flip homes and we did have to use all our capital to pay the bills for them.  We had to bite the bullet, sell the homes cheaper than we wanted to, but they are gone now and things are looking better.  I am just so thankful everyday that we could’ve lost everything back to the bank, but it was a very long year in 2007.

I also have to say that this country has lived threw this kind of economy back in the 70′s and we pulled through it then and I know we can pull through it now.  I also think that being frugal and really watching what you buy and only spending money on the survival items, makes one a better person.

Hang in their folks!!!!!

I have been an Elvis fan since I was big enough to dance to his music on American Bandstand.  I was also born and raised 3 hours north of Graceland, so he was the biggest star in our area back then.  I have been to Graceland and Tupelo numerous times with friends and family and love it every time.  Great place to see if you are ever in the the area.

My mom and I were suppose to see his concert for the very 1st time in Memphis, but he died 2 weeks before we got to go.  So in his honor, I kept the ballot to vote for the USPS stamp to comemorate him all those years ago and framed it with stamps and a 1st edition post card from Graceland.  It hangs proudly in my bathroom to remember, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.  :)

Retrodiva designs has come out with her August Club kit and the colors are just beautiful.

  1. It really dates me when I say I was at camp the week Elvis died. Many people I know were not alive then.

  2. I agree with the price of food, there is just two of us also and my bill still hits $150.00 and many times I come home and don’t feel that I have bought anything. Bread is well over $2 a loaf and milk is close to $5. They cut our taxes (I’m Canadian) but the price of everything went up……..so it evens out I guess.

  3. I’m glad you didn’t lose everything this year and I know it must have been so stressful. Hopefully things will start looking up for all of us! Your layout of Graceland brought back great memories of our trip there in May.
