Travel Horror

Everyone has at least one travel ‘horror’ story. Share your worst experience(s) with us.

After I moved to Georgia from Missouri, I still wanted to go to Evansville, IN with my bowling team from Missouri for our yearly tournament trip.

Now, I am a little on the cheap side and didn’t want to pay for a plane ticket, so I thought I would take the bus from Macon, GA to Sikeston, MO. OMG!! It was a horror movie from the very start.

I left Macon and was to catch the next bus at Atlanta. I sat in their bus depot for a few hours waiting for a bus that was full and would only accept a handful of people. And on top of that wasn’t going to Memphis but to Nashville. I just so happen to be one of the 5 that was allowed on the bus, after midnight. Oh the story only gets better.

We had been on the road for about 3 hours and when you get close to Chattanooga, TN the mountains are a plenty. We started going up one side of the mountain and I noticed the bus wasn’t moving very well. When topped the hill, the bus driver stopped the bus and went outside to check the motor. There was smoke and all kinds of “something is wrong” smells coming out of the motor. He was able to drive it to the next convenient store and we all sat there, in the middle of the night, for 3 hours for another bus to come and pick us up.

So, now we are on our way to Nashville and I knew when I got there that I was going to miss the bus that I was suppose to catch in Memphis, because of the delay. A few hours later, when we finally made it to Memphis, I was told there wasn’t another bus until 10 pm that night. It was 10 am that morning and I just lost it!!!!!!! I started crying and thought, what am I going to do. There is a crazy man with a bag over his head sitting in the waiting room where I was waiting with the other passengers that were stranded just a crying. I thought to myself, “I am 45 years old, I’m going to call my mama!!!!!!!!! wwwwwwhhhhhaaaaaaaa” So, I called her collect and my parents drove the 3 hours to come and pick me up!! I had been on that 10 hour trip for more than 18 hours and still had 3 hours to go to get home. And then I realized, I had to take the trip back home on the bus.

Well, as luck would have it, the trip back (a different route) was great! There wasn’t hardly anyone on the bus the whole trip and there were no problems. Except for the fact that my bus driver was Red Skelton’s evil twin.

So, no more traveling via Greyhound bus and I will pay the extra money to fly. Which I hate doing now too! Another story, another day!

  1. I am very glad I don’t have a travel story to match that – I would never leave home again! Thanks for sharing it.

  2. Worst travel story? Probably the time we were flying into Atlanta. We heard the wheels drop for landing, and all of a sudden the pilot cusses and the plane goes straight back up. Strangers were holding hands and praying. Turns out that we had been cleared to land on a strip that already had a plane on it.

  3. You don’t want my travel story. . . it starts off with my husband and I traveling with our infant daughter to Pennsylvania, having to switch planes in Chicago-O’Hare by being shuttled across the run-way in hopes to catch our flight (and this is after figuring out how to get down a flight of stairs carrying an infant and a stroller/carseat) with no stroller/handicapped access). . . and ends with the airline sending our luggage to a completely different city (carseat included). . .

  4. Great story, Tammy! I’m glad you sound like you can laugh about it now although it’s never funny at the time!

  5. What a horrible trip!! Never take a bus!! I would have called my mom too!!! And WOW I love your bows!! Do you make them and ship them? I would love some!! I just had a little girl!!!

  6. Oh Tammy! I feel for you I also have Greyhound horror stories. I am sorry you had to relive that! Thanks for sharing though. Now you can look back and laugh I hope!

  7. Oh wow! I used to ride the greyhound 2 hours to my grandparents house when I was stationed in San Diego (Before I bought a car). Never had to travel that long, but my mom traveled from Ohio to San Diego on a grayhound. It took a couple days and the first thing she said to me when she saw me was “I need a shower.” LOL

  8. I think that is why I never traveled by bus. Glad you learned your lesson, LOL.

  9. Freaking hilarious. I’ve had tightwad moments that didn’t work out for me, too.

Loved the way you told the story, too.

  10. oh Tammy that sucks…
glad your parents came to get you and getting home was good.
